Particulate matter, nitrogen oxides (NOx) and sulfur oxides (SOx) were considered major pollutants in terms of volume, but participating companies also agreed to monitor the emission of other substances such as dioxins and furans, volatile organic compounds and metals heavy (mercury, cadmium and thallium). We will be also monitor the emission of other heavy metals (antimony, arsenic, lead, chromium, cobalt, copper, manganese, nickel and vanadium).\u200b<\/p><p>As part of the initiative, each company set individual goals and pledged to monitor and publish annually emissions since 2006, based on performance indicators common to members of CSI. Thus, the cement industry stakeholders now have clear and reliable information on the nature of emissions, its impacts and what is being done to reduce them.<\/p><h2>NOx Reduction in Canada<\/h2><p>The companies of Votorantim Cimentos North America (VCNA) achieved an expressive reduction in NOx (carbon oxide) emissions at their facilities. With the use of SNCR (Selective Non-Catalytic Reduction), a method which injects ammonia or urea into clinker kiln exhausts, NOx levels were cut by as much as 40%.<\/p><p>Ammonia and NOx react chemically to form a water and nitrogen vapor. The release of the pollutant is monitored continuously, enabling the facility to adjust the amount of ammonia injected into the kilns. In this manner VCNA companies managed to avoid releasing nearly six thousand metric tons of gas into the atmosphere.<\/p><p>In use at Votorantim Cement since 2004, the method is a new arrival to the cement industry. The system was chosen for being more economical and more efficient than SCR (Selective Catalytic Reduction), the method most commonly used in the sector. SNCR enabled the Canada-based company to bring its NOx emissions within Ontario\u2019s provincial regulations. Suwannee, located in Branford, Florida (USA) was the first Votorantim plant to adopt the method.<\/p><h2>SOx Reduction in the United States<\/h2><p>The St. Marys cement plant reduced its SOx emissions by 56.5% in 2006. Faced with the initial target of a 49% decrease, the unit installed a lime injection system toward the end of 2005. Lime reacts with SOx to form calcium sulphide, which either remains in solid form or is collected by the sleeve filters. \u2028<\/p><p>This measure enabled the facility to exceed its initial target and achieve a 56.5% drop in comparison with rates for the first nine months of 2006 and the same period of 2005. The system became operational in January 2006.<\/p><h4>Commitments individually assumed by CSI companies<\/h4><ul><li>Implement the recommendations outlined in the Emissions Monitoring and Reporting\u00a0Protocol.<\/li><li>Make data on emissions available and accessible to stakeholders by 2006.<\/li><li><p>Set emission reduction targets for all relevant pollutants and make the results public.<\/p><\/li><\/ul><h4>Results obtained by Votorantim Cimentos:<\/h4><ul><li>Based on CSI directives, VC established corporate guidelines for Emissions Monitoring and\u00a0Reporting in December 2005;<\/li><li>Reduction targets: targets for reducing emissions in Votorantim Cements were defined\u00a0internally and spontaneously in 2000, shortly after the accession of the Company CSI: 5% reduction in emissions of NOx, SOx and particulate matter (PM) in 2012, compared with the\u00a0data of 2000. By 2011, there were declines of 7.7% in NOx and 1.7% in SOx. The main\u00a0initiatives implemented in the VC in order to obtain these results were: NOx reductions in\u00a0Canada and SOx reductions in the USA.<\/li><\/ul><p>\u00a0<\/p><h2>Emissions Monitoring and Reporting<\/h2><p>\u00a0<\/p><p>Votorantim Cimentos drafted a manual for its mandatory procedures concerning stack emissions from its clinker kilns: \u201cEmissions Monitoring and Reporting\u201d (EMR). Its stipulations do not constitute legal requirements, but do represent the state-of-the-art in emissions management.<\/p><h3>\u2028The main EMR objectives are to:<\/h3><div><h4>Internally<\/h4><ul><li>provide a panorama of VC in terms of the main stack emissions generated by its cement\u00a0factories;<\/li><li>plan for continuous improvement by setting targets and standards;<\/li><li>demonstrate progress through reliable and transparent measuring and reporting.<\/li><\/ul><h4>Externally<\/h4><ul><li>build and maintain corporate trust and credibility;<\/li><li>create and preserve a corporate image associated with sustainable development;<\/li><li>help valorize the business;<\/li><li>support and subsidize the facilities so that they can measure, evaluate, and report principal\u00a0stack emissions;<\/li><li><p>ensure the quality and comparability of the results in relation to the following aspects:\u00a0compliance with legal requirements, results benchmarking, and continuous performance\u00a0improvement.<\/p><\/li><\/ul><h2>Measuring progress<\/h2><p>The reduction of pollutant emissions can be evaluated using the total emissions (grams\/metric tons of clinker) and absolute figures (metric tons per year) of the following pollutants:<\/p><h4>NOx<\/h4><ul><li>Specific NOx emissions (kilogram of NOx\/metric ton of clinker).<\/li><li>Absolute Emission of NOx (ton of NOx\/year).<\/li><\/ul><h4>SOx<\/h4><ul><li>Specific SOx emissions (kilogram of SOx\/ton of clinker).<\/li><li>Absolute Emission of SOx (ton of SOx\/year).<\/li><\/ul><h4>Particulate Matter<\/h4><ul><li>Specific particulate matter emissions (kilogram of particulate matter\/metric ton of clinker).<\/li><li><p>Absolute Emission of Particulate Matter (ton of PM\/year).<\/p><\/li><\/ul><p>The number of kilns with continuous and discontinuous monitoring increased between 2009 and 2011.
